AJ Bower- Sophomore
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Alton tennis player A.J. Bower was recently selected by the USTA Missouri Valley committee to receive the 2017 Boys 16 Junior Sportsmanship awards for the St. Louis District and the Missouri Valley.
The Missouri Valley honor was for excellence in this award category in a five-state area. Bower received the award this past weekend at the annual Missouri Valley Award luncheon in Overland Park, Kansas.
The Missouri Valley Region of the USTA covers includes Nebraska, Iowa, Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas. The Alton area is considered a part of the St. Louis, Missouri area for USTA purposes.
According to the USTA, the Missouri Valley Junior Sportsmanship award is given to a male and female junior player in each age group, boys and girls 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18’s who best exemplifies the finest qualities of sportsmanship in competitive play including tournaments, USTA Junior Team Tennis and 10 and Under Tennis tournaments.
Other winners included Clayton Maack of Chesterfield in Boys 18s, Mason Thieu of Topeka in Boys 14s, Langdon Tingleaf of Owasso, Oklahoma in Boys 12s, Natalie Malone of St. Louis in Girls 18s, Rachel McCorkle of Tulsa in Girls 16s, Dani Rosenberger of St. Louis in Girls 14s, Gracie Epps of Norman, Oklahoma in Girls 12s and Caroline Daugherty of Tulsa in Girls 10s.
Last spring as a freshman at Marquette Catholic High School, Bower and doubles partner Joe Segneri advanced to the IHSA Class 1A State Tennis Tournament after qualifying at the Triad Sectional Tournament.
Recently, Bower finished in third place in a USTA Futures qualifier at Sunset Hills, Missouri. Bower also advanced to the consolation semifinals at the Thanksgiving Holiday Open at Woods Mill Tennis Club in Chesterfield, Missouri.
