SPRINGFIELD – Marquette Catholic principal Mike Slaughter was confident enough about a victory to make the drive to Springfield.
He was not confident enough, however, to have the date engraved on the plaque commemorating career win No. 500 for Explorers softball coach Dan Wiedman.
But April 12,
“Just a lot of good teams over the years,” Wiedman said of memories triggered by the milestone. “A lot of good players, a lot of good families, a lot of good assistant coaches. The head coach gets a lot of the credit for everything, but we don’t win any games.”
According to IHSA records, Wiedman is the 27th coach in state history to get to 500 victories. He joins Edwardsville’s Lori Blade (687 wins) and Belleville East’s Rita Menke (613) as the only Metro East coaches in that club.
