PREP SOFTBALL: Unbeaten Explorers beat SHG, give Wiedman win No. 500

Wiedman gets win No. 500 at Marquette

SPRINGFIELD – Marquette Catholic principal Mike Slaughter was confident enough about a victory to make the drive to Springfield.

He was not confident enough, however, to have the date engraved on the plaque commemorating career win No. 500 for Explorers softball coach Dan Wiedman.

But April 12, 2018 will fill the space left empty after Marquette defeated the Springfield SHG Crusaders 7-2 on Thursday at SHG. The Explorers improve to 12-0 put Wiedman’s record at 500-260 in his 24th season at Marquette.

“Just a lot of good teams over the years,” Wiedman said of memories triggered by the milestone. “A lot of good players, a lot of good families, a lot of good assistant coaches. The head coach gets a lot of the credit for everything, but we don’t win any games.”

According to IHSA records, Wiedman is the 27th coach in state history to get to 500 victories. He joins Edwardsville’s Lori Blade (687 wins) and Belleville East’s Rita Menke (613) as the only Metro East coaches in that club.
